Gornergrat Bahn tours
A ride on Switzerland’s Gornergrat Bahn railway feels like an ascent to heaven. First opened in 1898, this historic electric railway takes you on a winding ascent from the picturesque resort of Zermatt to the mighty Gornergrat glacier. As the train climbs higher and Zermatt drops away, you ascend ever closer to the Matterhorn, gaining astonishing views of one of the world’s most famous mountain peaks.
It’s impossible not to be awed by the scenery of the Gornergrat ridge. The track winds through thick trees, and the mountain looms through your window in all its proud, sculpted glory, its peak enveloped in sunshine.
The Gornergrat Bahn train finally reaches the Gornergrat mountain summit, 3089 metres high: Switzerland’s highest open-air rail station. Here, enjoy magnificent panoramic views of 29 snow-veiled rocky peaks and 7 glaciers. The Gornergrat railway is unmissable.
