DAY 2 to 4: At leisure in San Francisco.

One of America's most exciting cities, San Francisco has something for everyone, from the cultural and historic to the bohemian and beautiful. Visit some of its most celebrated sights such as the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, winding Lombard Street and infamous Alcatraz Island (we recommend booking tickets in advance). Discover the colourful waterfront community of Fisherman's Wharf where seafood restaurants, museums, shops and other attractions line historic wooden quaysides. Afterwards, take in Pier 39, famous for its resident and visiting sea lion colonies, and head for the Ferry Building to meander through the marketplace browsing fresh, local delicacies. Explore Golden Gate Park, a green oasis in the heart of the city, which is home to a Japanese tea garden, Dutch windmills, the Conservatory of Flowers and even a herd of bison. Don't miss the extraordinary California Academy of Sciences, where an aquarium, planetarium, natural history museum and four-storey high rainforest all come other in a state-of-the-art, sustainably built complex. You may also want to explore the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art or catch a baseball game at AT&T Park, home to the San Francisco Giants. And if you fancy getting out of the city, perhaps take a day trip to a California winery or Yosemite National Park. You have three days to discover the best of this fabulous city and its surrounding countryside.

DAY 5: San Francisco - Palm Springs.

Transfer to the airport for your flight to Palm Springs, where you will stay for the next three nights.

DAY 6 to 7: At leisure in Palm Springs.

Famed as a holiday retreat for Hollywood's crème de la crème in the 1960s, the desert getaway of Palm Springs is still sprinkled with stardust. Basking in 354 days of sunshine a year, it remains a favourite haunt of many of today's movie stars and celebrities. Spend your two days here relaxing by the pool at your hotel or dipping into the boutiques, art galleries, antique shops and restaurants along Palm Canyon Drive, which weaves through the historic downtown area. Palm Springs is also home to many beautifully restored 1950s and '60s buildings, including the landmark Modernist style Kaufmann Desert House, the house where Elvis Presley spent his honeymoon and Frank Sinatra's holiday hideaway, where the singing legend swam in a pool shaped like a grand piano. You can also head out of town to ride the Palm Springs aerial tramway, which whisks you from the Coachella Valley to San Jacinto Peak for breathtaking panoramic views. Other attractions include the rocky, Alpine-like wilderness of Mount San Jacinto State Park and the awe-inspiring Tahquitz Canyon, whose rugged landscapes and cliffs are populated by a huge assortment of wildlife like jazzily coloured lizards, birds and the famous roadrunner. However you spend your time here, you're sure to be captivated by the town's desert mystique and glamorous Hollywood atmosphere.

DAY 8 to 9: Palm Springs.

Two more days to enjoy Palm Springs.

Transfer to the airport for your flight to the UK.
