Take the New England Thruway via New Haven, home of Yale University and New London, then into the tiny state of Rhode Island to Newport, home of the world famous jazz festival and millionaire mansions. Here visit The Breakers, Cornelius Vanderbilt's magnificent Italian palazzo, before heading north into Massachusetts to the historic seaside port of Plymouth, where the Pilgrim Fathers landed in the Mayflower in 1620.
Begin the day with a visit to Plimoth Plantation, a living history museum of 17th century Plymouth where costumed interpreters portray past residents of the colony. This afternoon why not join an optional excursion for an exciting whale watching expedition with commentary by a local marine biologist? Afterwards, visit the historic town of Plymouth and Plymouth Rock, the spot where the Pilgrims landed. The evening is at leisure.
This morning enjoy a visit to the Mayflower II to explore a reproduction of the ship that brought the Pilgrims to the New World. Later head for Boston, the 'Cradle of American Liberty', where the rest of the day is at leisure.
Boston has numerous impressive landmarks which reflect the role the city has played in the history of the United States. Enjoy an included guided sightseeing tour that takes in many of the major sights, including Beacon Hill, the Old North Church, Boston Common and the Public Gardens. Afterwards there is time to explore Faneuil Hall before travelling to the picture perfect ocean front village of Ogunquit, a haven for writers and artists. In the evening, why not sample the delicious local fare on an optional lobster bake excursion?
Today marvel at New England's autumn splendour as you head through forests ablaze with colour to Lake Winnipesaukee, one of the region's largest and most beautiful stretches of water. Enjoy a cruise across this island-studded lake aboard the historic MS Mount Washington to the resort of Wolfeboro. Overnight is in North Conway, with a backdrop of over 700,000 acres of protected White Mountain National Forest.
Travel through glorious rolling countryside and continue across New Hampshire into Vermont, where the birch, oak and maple leaves form a brilliant kaleidoscope of colour. After a stop in Montpelier, there is a visit to a nearby maple syrup farm. The rest of the evening is at leisure.
This morning drive to the shores of Lake Champlain and board the ferry for the scenic crossing into the state of New York. Driving through the rugged foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, reach the village of Lake Placid. The rest of the day is leisure so perhaps take a stroll along Mirror Lake, or visit the Olympic Skating Centre.
This morning is at leisure, so why not indulge in some souvenir shopping on Main Street? An orientation tour shows off Saratoga's charming downtown with its Victorian buildings and one-of-a-kind boutiques.
Enjoy a short stop in Albany, the State Capital of New York for an orientation tour. Later, continue to the airport for your flight to the UK, or extend your stay in New York.
Note: Chosen departure dates are historically the best dates to see the autumn foliage - weather permitting.
Why not enjoy an optional whale watching cruise from Plymouth in search of the world's largest mammals. Humpback and finback whales are found in the area, along with porpoises and many other marine mammals and birds?

We had a great holiday; the only thing that could have been better was the transfer from New York airport to the Hotel. We waited over an hour for the pick up to arrive. Two fellow passengers on the same plane on the same holiday were picked up within 20 minutes. It would have been nice to have a representative meet us and to have arranged for us to travel in the same vehicle as we were going to the same hotel.
John, the guide was very knowledgeable and helpful..
