Transfer to the airport for your flight to Kota Kinabalu.
After breakfast, travel through the lush green countryside dotted with padi fields, pepper gardens and rubber plantations, and flanked by rugged jungle-clad mountains. Stop for lunch at a roadside bazaar deep in Iban country before heading up Lemanak River in the mid-afternoon, passing through typical Borneo countryside. For Guests Staying At The Local Longhouse Community: Arrive at Serubah Longhouse and visit the "entire village under one roof." Dinner, featuring delicious fresh jungle produce, is served in the simple guest-house. After dinner, return to the longhouse for your evening's entertainment, including traditional dancing, music, games and a glass or two of tuak (rice wine) with the longhouse chief. The Iban are a fun-loving people, and visitors are encouraged to join in! Overnight in the guest house with basic amenities (No air-conditioning and no private room for individuals) as the accommodation is built by the Longhouse people to help supplement their income for their livelihood and children's education. For Guests Staying At Batang Ai by Hilton: After dropping some guests off at Lemanak, the remaining guests will return downriver for transfer to Batang Ai Jetty. After the 20 minute boat ride across the Batang Ai Hydro Lake, arrive at the luxurious Hilton Batang Ai Longhouse Resort. Dinner, and accommodation at the resort. (B, L, D)
For Guests Staying At The Local Longhouse Community: After breakfast, enjoy a blowpipe demonstration and try shooting one yourself. Then take a short walk through the forest accompanied by Iban trackers, and learn about the traditional uses of rainforest plants in Iban culture. The walk ends at the river bank, where you embark in a longboat for a journey upriver to a tree-lined jungle pool. Lunch is cooked at the riverside in traditional Iban style - all ingredients are steamed in freshly-cut bamboo tubes over an open fire. After lunch, bathe in the pool or relax at the waterside. The return journey is done in traditional style to the sounds of the rainforest - boats are propelled with poles instead of outboard motor. Return downriver for transfer to Batang Ai jetty. After the boat ride across Batang Ai Hydro Lake, arrive at the luxurious Hilton Batang Ai Longhouse Resort. For Guests Staying at the Batang Ai by Hilton: After breakfast, leave the Resort by Shuttle Boat and journey to the Lemanak River for the short ride to the longhouse, where you will join the rest of the group and start the blow pipe activities. After breakfast, leave Kuching and transfer to the airport for your flight to Sandakan via Kota Kinabalu. The evening is free to relax and settle into your new hotel. (B, L, D)
Rise early this morning to see a real highlight of your trip - a visit to the Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre, situated in the Kabili-Sepilok Forest. Learn about the rehabilitation of young or strayed orang-utans before taking a board walk through the lowland rainforest to a viewing platform where you will witness the feeding of orphaned orang-utans; a once in a lifetime experience. After lunch proceed to Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary for the afternoon feeding. This privately-owned sanctuary located within an oil palm estate gives you the chance to observe these animals up close and personal. After dinner, enjoy a Night Cruise along the river. Keep an eye out for all the nocturnal animals along the riverbank. (B, L, D)
Rise early this morning, to the call of birds, insects and animals before taking a cruise on the Kinabatangan River. The river is best viewed at dawn and sustains one of the world's richest ecosystems; it is one of just two known places in the world where ten species of primates can be found. As well as orang-utans and proboscis monkeys, you may even sight an Asian elephant or Sumatran rhinoceros amongst the thick forest or at the water's edge. Continue up the river to Kelenanap Ox-Bow Lake to watch for birds and other wildlife, before returning to your lodge for breakfast. This morning, you will have the unique opportunity to help the Borneo Nature Lodge contribute to a wildlife corridor by planting seedlings bought from a nursery in Sukau, run by Kinabatangan Orang-utan Conservation Project. The seedlings are specifically chosen for their suitability for local wildlife including orang-utans. Enjoy a free afternoon, before taking an evening cruise along the river to search for more flora and fauna. (B, L, D)
After a leisurely breakfast depart for Sandakan Airport and fly to Kota Kinabalu. The rest of the day is yours to do with what you wish. (B, L)
Take a morning drive to Gayang Village. Upon reaching the village board the boat and journey down the river to see the houses of the Bajau's. Observe the vegetation of the mangrove and Stilt houses, which can be seen along the river banks. After returning back to the jetty, experience Batik Painting, one of the countries pastimes. Try your skills on one of Malaysia's major Cottage industry and you just might be able to bring back your priceless work of art. (B)
