Alaskan Adventure + Alaska Cruise (MS Zaandam)

Alaska's Glacier Bay is magnificent

See Alaska's great wilderness, glaciers and mountainous peaks on this fantastic tour, combined with an unforgettable cruise aboard Holland America's luxurious MS Zaandam.

Your Itinerary

DAY 1: UK – Anchorage.

Fly to Anchorage where you will be met by our representative and and transferred to your hotel for the next two nights.

DAY 2: Anchorage.

Today, travel along the spectacular Turnagain Arm, soaking up epic views of the steep mountainsides plummeting into the sparkling waters of Cook Inlet. On the way, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife - you may spot Dall sheep, bald eagles and even some of the inlet’s famous Beluga whales. From here, drive through the Chugach National Forest to Portage Lake, where you will board a boat for a scenic cruise to Portage Glacier. Accompanied by a National Forest Service interpreter, you will be taken just 300 yards from the glacier's terminus, where you can listen for the telltale cracking sounds that precede huge chunks of ice crashing into the water below. The rest of the day is yours to explore Anchorage under your own steam.

DAY 3: Anchorage - Fairbanks.

Today starts with a drive to Fairbanks, passing through the lush farming region of Matanuska Valley and over the dramatic Tahneta Pass, enjoying fantastic views of Matanuska Glacier. En route, you’ll pass Wrangall-St Elias National Preserve, an area characterised by glaciers larger than Manhattan Island and nine of the 16 highest peaks in North America.

DAY 4: Fairbanks.

Climb aboard an authentic Alaskan Sternwheeler - the Riverboat Discovery - for a leisurely cruise on the Chena and Tanana Rivers. Enjoy the scenery as your boat paddles into the wilderness, passing dense pine forests and untouched coves. Stop at a recreated Athabascan Indian village to learn about their history. The rest of the day is at leisure in Fairbanks.

DAY 5: Fairbanks - Denali National Park.

An unforgettable journey on the world-famous Alaska Railroad awaits today. Watch captivated as your train glides through some of Alaska's most beautiful landscapes, before arriving in Denali where the afternoon is free. Why not use the time taking an optional flightseeing trip over Mount McKinley or to the top of a glacier - both unforgettable experiences.

DAY 6: Denali National Park.

Today is your own to explore Denali National Park. You may want to set off on a local hiking trail to spot wildlife and soak up marvellous views of Mount McKinley - if you're lucky with the weather! Alternatively, take off on an adventurous rafting trip along the beautiful Nenana River.

DAY 7: Seward to embark your cruise ship.

Transfer to the port in Seward to embark your ship, MS Zaandam. Set sail this evening. (D)

DAY 8: At sea.

A relaxing day at sea provides time to explore the ship’s many amenities. Animal and marine life are abundant in this area and with a little luck you may spot a pod of mighty Orcas. (B, L, D)

DAY 9: Glacier Bay.

Cruise into spectacular Glacier Bay early this morning. Forests give way to a rugged landscape rising to rocky peaks. Sixteen huge mountains converge to create an awe-inspiring panoramic wonder, a spectacular scene of awesome glaciers and massive icebergs. Wildlife is abundant, and you may spot eagles, seals, mountain goats, moose and bears in their natural habitat. (B, L, D)

DAY 10: Haines.

Nestled on the shores of America's longest fjord, Haines is in a spectacular setting. You may wish to fill your day with a float trip through the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve which protects the habitat of the nation's avian symbol, or visit the Sheldon Museum, art galleries and local hops in town. (B, L, D)

DAY 11: Juneau.

The city has a Gold Rush story to rival that of Klondike, and is only accessible by seaplane or boat. An optional wildlife cruise and salmon fishing will normally be available, and you'll also have the opportunity to take an optional excursion to Juneau's own glacier, Mendenhall. This impressive river of blue ice is about 1.5 miles wide and over 12 miles long! (B, L, D)

DAY 12: Ketchikan.

Colourful Ketchikan is situated on Revillagigedo Island and is known as the 'Salmon Capital of the World'. Here, a picturesque harbour shelters fishing boats and seaplanes. A wide choice of optional excursions will be available, including an outing to see Indian Heritage Villages, Totem Bight State Park and flightseeing to Misty Fjords National Monument. (B, L, D)

DAY 13: Inside Passage.

The beauty of the Inside Passage will amaze you as you cruise through 1,000 miles of epic scenery, towering glaciated mountains, roaring waterfalls, endless islands and virgin rain forests. You glimpse a deep fjord and far to the east the sun glints on snow-capped peaks. There is also plenty of animal and marine life to look out for including sea lions, eagles and porpoises. (B, L, D)

DAY 14: Vancouver - UK.

After breakfast, disembark your ship and transfer to Vancouver airport for your overnight flight to the UK. (B)

DAY 15: Home landing in the UK.
